AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT OF ARUN DEY:
I was born in a family where both my grandfather and father were social reformers. My grandfather was a school teacher and encouraged the backward class children to attend school. My father, a lawyer by profession, an ardent freedom fighter who worked closely with Gandhi, was an original thinker and helped us to grow up independent and confident individuals. My mother was very soft, ethical and socially conscious woman. She had supported my father in his ideals of patriotism and lead a selfless and simple life. I weas fifth born in the family of sixth children.
As student in college, I was elected to the students union Assistant Secretary, Secretary and president during the undergraduate and graduate course respectively and lead the student movement of our state during 1967 and 1970. As a student I spent all my vacations working for people affected in flood, famine, drought or constructing road in villages in different parts of my state.
After completing law course, I joined as an attorney in our District Balasore. During a period of three years before I was elected to State Assembly, I had worked as an Attorney in setting mass exploitation cases, Labor Disputes Cases of Women Abuse and Divorces, Land Disputes Cases. However, after joining politics as a member of Legislative assembly, I could not practice Law full – time. But
I am a regular member of our state Bar council and ever since have been resolving Labor Tribunal Cases.
As a young boy I saw my father ignoring hardship and family comfort and devoting his life full for the pre and post independent movement of India and organizing rural people to fight for the country’s freedom and post freedom construction work in the country. Being born in the family which pursued sacrifice over comfort society and people’s cause; I was naturally drawn in to social work and community organization. I stood by my father’s side as a young boy in 1950s to work for the people and the society. Since then, I have never looked back for last three decades I have devoted myself for community welfare, whether it is school campus or in the factory premises for industrial laborers or in the green fields in the village for the protection of the farmers against exploitation. Leadership ability came naturally with me and I was a leader among my peers early as I was a student leader in the school and was awarded for my leadership and philanthropic activities. It was not all a life of reward. Often times, I had faced severe opposition from people for standing up and fighting against injustice and exploitation.

In 1974 , the people of my locality rewarded me by electing me to the legislative assembly of my State; odisha . The people of my locality bestowing confidence in my ability have elected me for the third time with record margin of votes. I was one of the youngest members of the State when I was elected for the first time to State Assembly
The decision to devote myself fully for community work was rather hereditary than inspiration. Besides, my personal choice to lead a bachelor life without much family encumbrances has provided me ample opportunity to be available to people for social work and other human rights activities As a member of the Legislative Assembly and as a social worker involved with all section of people, I have traveled different parts of the country and made rapport with the people communicated with them and tried to understand their social economic and cultural problems. I have tried to make an assessment of their situation, took case histories and made in – depth research to evaluate the cause of the plight. Because of this serious and continuous involvement with people and their cause I have been able to locate the source of their problem and worked with Government and voluntary organization to solve their problems.

As a young boy I grew up respecting women and developing a feeling that women like poor, backward class and ignorant people are not treated well in society. As such a lifelong commitment for me was to arouse awareness among women in my State. This T achieved by addressing people in rural areas and encouraging women to come out and attend public meetings with men on my state. I have taken wholehearted initiative and drive to fight against the system of Dowry in our country.
My agenda of social work did not only include arousing political awareness and educating people to be involved in the process of political participation but arousing mass consciousness against blind beliefs, ignorance as well as a conscious citizen, I have always tried to remain vigilant to safeguard the interest of the common people and help them to safeguard their human right.
I have a big following with the young generation specially among school and college student whom I address from time to time on various permanent social issues as well as on coming issues. However , I feel fortunate to have earned the support of the senior , a citizens of my state alike. In my capacity as a legislator, a citizen, a lawyer and social worker I haveHelped them in getting their disputes settled, getting proper medical care and in availing government old age pensions and the like.
As for solving the problem of unemployment, I have initiated rapid industrialization in m y area where new industries have been established and along with our districts and state officials, we have devised ways so that our local entrepreneuring young people gets jobs. This has worked very well and more and more young people are taking technical training to choose vocations which can help them maintain their livelihood as well as prepare themselves for future education, career and life.
I was appointed to Utkal University as a member of the senate to look to the affairs of university as mass leader and propose suggestions for improvement of the Examination system. I had also acted as speaker in numerous legal conferences and social work workshop. I was also a speaker and a talk-show guest in radio and televisions respectively.
During 1990 – 1992, I was chairman of the municipality of my district as well as the member of legislative assembly. During my tenure as the chairman of Balasore Municipality, with my initiative and under my supervision roads have been remodeled, remote areas have been linked by roads to town, financial grants were given to school for renovations and extensions of school complex, a city wide sanitation program was undertaken, drinking water connection were given in neglected areas, town bus facility was introduced in the town, and grants from government were availed for constructions of a big market complex in the town which accommodated business of people 10 times than it was earlier. One major and historic achievement of our effort was that the township got two - way roads making life lot safer; for beatification of the city and gardens in historic places.
As a member of Legislative Assembly, I have made all possible efforts to rebuild rural roads, purify expand ponds for community use, establish clubs for youth and women and most importantly arranged grants for constructions of playgrounds and supply of sports goods to the youth in village as well as in city areas. From time to time I have worked with the conscious citizens to solve problem of the area like price rise, drug and alcohol problem, family problem and disputes between communities and different religious groups.
I represent about three lakhs of electorates comprising of Muslim, Christians, and Hindus. Even through I was born in a Hindu family; I have always learnt to respect every religion. That is even true with all my brothers and sisters, simply because both my parents were respectful to all people irrespective of class, creed, color or sex. I am equally accepted by different religious communities. I am approachable by men and women alike any time whether day or night for any cause.

A landmark achievement in my career is preventing the unplanned and irresponsible evacuation of farmers and betel – leaf and coconut cultivator form the bay and shore area of Bay of Bengal at Baliapal and Chandipur during the launching of ‘’ AGNI ‘’ one of INDIA ‘ s surface to surface missile . During that time in 1989 , I had fought tooth and nail with the central Government of India for the cause of people . I was and am all in favor of scientific and technological development in my country but I stood up and fought for unplanned and irresponsible strategy to evacuate people from the missile launching site . The news about this had come out in all leading papers of the world including Washington Post .

Until 1990 , my sister who was a professor lived with me . She is a women ‘ s liberation worker and a public speaker in her own right . We both being good orators in our school days discuss often times on issues that concerns our community and our stability as a human race . Both of us , we used to enjoy reading world classics , poems and News papers . I was a football player , a very good artist , was in dramatics , and was a good singer . In my life with pressing socio – political schedules I hardly find free tine to pursue my hobbies to my heart ‘ s content . But whenever I get a chance I love to pursue those . I love to raise garden and care pets . In my total association with our dugs we had at our home I always felt at peace with them for I enjoyed carrying out the nonverbal communication with my dugs . I am fond of children and want to see that children get a secure nurturing in their childhood . For this reason I have helped many orphaned children to get admission in our state ‘ s orphanages and worked with my sister and others to raise funds and clothing for the comfort of those children . In my capacity a Member of the Legislative Assembly , I was assigned to go to different States of India and give a report on Child Labor and Juvenile Delinquency . This assignment has not only sharpened my insight to look in to the problems of child labor and Juvenile delinquency but has developed in me a deep love and affection for the children and understanding about the plight they suffer when they are exploited .

Last year I visited United States of America and came to know about their socio – cultural life through first hand experience and could see the difference in their ways of functioning in the field of social work . That gave me an opportunity to compare and comprehend the vast difference in All spheres of life of the two democratic counters of the world . What impressed me most is the scientific way in which the social problem are being solved in U.S.A. . The adoption of different strategies foe solving the problems aroused interest in me to pursue a course in social work. I now am strongly convinced that if I can devote some time in studying community work , social work, management-administration and problem-solving strategies , I will be strongly prepared to solve the problem of our country better . I feel that the old method of aimless social service may neither help the deprived in the society to become self – sufficient nor act as catalytic agent to bring reorganization in the social structure . This reorganization in my thinking and conviction has precisely motivated me to study social work systematically . My exposure to people of different section of society in diverse situations during last three decades has convinced me that grass root social work is essential to spread literacy programs and arouse mass awareness against all form of social , Political and religious exploitation. Even through I was a student of political science and Economics , a systematic study of social work will better equip me to understand the mass psychology scientifically . I would like to concentrate mainly on community Organisation and Administration , and upon my return after the completion of the course , I intend to be involved in the welfare work for the homeless aged , women and the handicapped .
